The National Rifle Association
and The NRA Foundation Salute America’s Veterans
NRA's connection with the military can be traced back to its founding in
1871 by two Union Army veterans of the Civil War, Col. William C. Church
and Gen. George Wingate. Over the next century, NRA's unyielding
commitment to freedom and patriotism would be especially evident during
World War II, when the association offered its ranges to the government,
developed pre-induction marksmanship training programs, and encouraged
members to serve as Home Guards, which states were organizing to replace
National Guard units.
Today, to permanently honor America’s Veterans, The NRA Foundation has established the U.S. Veteran’s Endowment.
The annual investment income from this endowment benefits NRA programs
to further NRA’s objectives “to train members of law enforcement
agencies, the armed forces, the militia, and people of good repute in
marksmanship and in the safe handling and efficient use of small arms
and…to promote the public safety, law and order, and the national
defense.”
In addition, the NRA has established the U.S. Veterans Honor Roll of
Freedom to recognize all Americans who served this great country.
Whether you or a loved one served in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert
Storm, or during peacetime – you or your loved one’s name can be added
to the U.S. Veterans Honor Roll of Freedom. The Honor Roll of
Freedom will be on display at the
National Firearms
Museum located at NRA Headquarters in Fairfax, VA.
