International Legal and Policy Storm Clouds Gathering to Threaten Second Amendment Rights in the US
The ‘international community’ including, most notably the United Nations, has long been engaged in an effort to limit the right of people in its member states to keep and bear arms. This includes indirect actions to limit the exercise of such rights in the United States as well. This generally takes the form of targeting ‘international’ trafficking in illicit firearms. The United States, especially during the administration of George W. Bush, at least held the line against formal moves in this regard that would have adversely impacted our rights here in this country. Now, however, with a new administration in Washington, and with Democratic majorities in both houses of the Congress, the environment is decidedly more favorable to the international anti-firearms advocates (led by the UK) than before. The moves toward an international arms treaty (‘ATT’ – Arms Trade Treaty) is now in high gear. If enacted, such document (and other intermediate) steps, would significantly impact firearms rights, regulations, and laws inside the United States. Congressman Barr’s presentation at the 2010 NRA Firearms Law Seminar will update attendees on these important legal and policy matters.
