Attorney
Martha Dean defends outdoor shooting ranges. In 2011, Dean obtained a favorable
outcome for the historic Lyman-owned Blue Trail Range in two heavily-litigated cases
that were aimed at shutting it down. Similarly, Dean established favorable national
precedents for outdoor ranges in federal court under the hazardous waste laws, the
federal Clean Water Act, and federal wetlands regulations when these laws were employed
as part of a strategy to shut down the Metacon Gun Club. In 2009, these favorable
decisions for Metacon were upheld on appeal by the U.S. Second Circuit Court of
Appeals. In 2008, Dean established favorable precedents for outdoor shooting ranges
in state court in another case against Metacon on issues of first impression under
statutes that are similar to those adopted by many states concerning noise and environmental
protection. Dean has taught range defense strategies at the NRA's national range
seminar. Dean litigates constitutional issues and is an avid supporter of the Right
to Bear Arms. In addition to defending ranges facing litigation, she advises ranges
on legal, strategic, and long-term planning issues.
Attorney Dean is a graduate of Wellesley College, B.A. '82, and the University of Connecticut School of Law, J.D. '86 (editor, Law Review). She is a member of the Connecticut Bar (1986), U.S. District Court (Connecticut) (1995), U.S. Court of Appeals (2nd Circuit) (2000), and the U.S. Supreme Court (2001). Dean co-founded the Federalist Society for Law & Public Policy Studies' Hartford Chapter and she is a Lifetime Member of the NRA. Dean was the Republican candidate for Connecticut Attorney General in 2002 and 2010.
