James A. Zammillo was appointed to the position of Deputy Assistant Director (Field Operations) on March 7, 2004. His current duties include oversight of all industry operations in the Bureau's 23 field divisions. In this position he also serves as one of four advisors to the Assistant Director for Field Operations.

Mr. Zammillo began his career with ATF in June 1968. He has 30 years of experience in the field as an inspector and area supervisor in New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. He has also served in Headquarters roles, such as Technical Advisor-Explosives; and, Chief, Policy and Program Coordination Staff. Mr. Zammillo was detailed to the Office of the Director where he was responsible for the initial determinations regarding the transition of ATF to the Department of Justice. In this capacity he chaired the team that determined how the Treasury Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms mission would be bifurcated between the Department of Justice and the Department of Treasury.

Immediately prior to his present appointment, Mr. Zammillo served the Bureau as the Chief Firearms Programs Division. In this capacity he was responsible for all of the ATF's firearms programs.
